Virginia Buhr    
Director of Development

Virginia has been involved in Waldorf education for thirty-five years. During her tenure at High Mowing School in Wilton, NH, she served as dorm counselor, teacher, College Guidance Counselor, Admissions Director, Communications Director and Administrator. She was on the Steering Committee for three rounds of accreditation for High Mowing. Virginia organized many AWSNA conferences and workshops and served on the AWSNA Summer Conference Planning Committee for five years. Virginia served on High Mowing’s Board of Trustees for several years and on the Development Committee.
Ralph Brooks

Ralph has twenty years experience with high school physical education as teacher, team coach, and fitness consultant. He has developed sports-specific and personalized weight training and conditioning programs. Previously, Ralph taught at Winchester and Burlington High Schools.  
Patrick Carter

Patrick is a painter, and has been a teacher in private and public schools and at the college and art school level over 30 years. His own works are in private and public collections and have been exhibited in Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, West Virginia, Texas, Philadelphia, New York, and the Boston area. He was co-founder of the School for Arts in Dover, DE, and developed the Artist-in-Residence in the Delaware Correctional System, where he was the first artist-in-residence. While working with us, Patrick also teaches at Tufts University, where he is Studio Coordinator, at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Montserrat College of Art. He works on private commissions in his home studio in Winchester.
Charles Claus

Before becoming a full time teacher, Chuck worked for eighteen years as an aircraft materials engineer by day and a professional musician by night. After a two year period on a music fellowship and performing in New York City, Chuck returned to Boston to obtain his teaching credential and teach mathematics and music in a parochial high school. Chuck continues his activities as a free-lance musician, and is enthusiastic about integrating his experience and vision as an engineer and artist in his teaching at Waldorf High School.

Tricia has worked in various sculpture media, as well as in calligraphy, black and white drawing, and graphics. She has a background in special education/art therapy as well as in holistic studies and art studies for adults.

Ellie is a full time teacher in our Humanities program, teaching history and English. She was a kindergarten teacher for sixteen years and an elementary class teacher in grades 5-8 for seven years, graduating two eighth grade classes from The Waldorf School, Lexington. Ellie has more than 30 years teaching experience and has spear-headed the development of the high school history curriculum. She currently serves on the AWSNA (Association of Waldorf Schools of North America) Accreditation Committee.

Prior to joining the Waldorf School of Massachusetts Bay, Barret was the social studies department leader for Providence Public Schools in Rhode Island. Prior to this appointment, Barret spent three years teaching in Austria and Italy, developing student conferences, athletic competitions, and middle and high school curricula. Born and raised in Virginia, Barret is excited to bring his experiences from Europe, as well as his current work in international development and international relations to the classroom.
Kai Matson

After graduating from the Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay, Kai studied Drama and Spanish at Ithaca College. After graduating from college she volunteered in a small, rural community in Ecuador teaching English to the local children. She lived in Ecuador for a year and in this time also tutored Spanish to other volunteers working in the community and did translating work for the community members. Kai developed a love of the Spanish language and culture while working with the children in Ecuador which she looks forward to sharing with her students at WHS.
Susan Morris

Susan has more than 25 years of experience in corporate and Waldorf administration. She worked as an executive assistant to the president of a computer company, and at the Waldorf School in Lexington as the Office Manager, Admissions Director and Administrator. She chaired the Accreditation Committee at the Waldorf School during two accreditation processes and served on the Waldorf School’s Board of Trustees for 10 years.

Cedar Oliver joins our faculty this year after serving as a full-time Waldorf high school teacher at High Mowing School in Wilton, New Hampshire for 12 years. He is the author and co-author of 21 books on math, science, and computer technology. He developed an aquatic habitat analysis system for the US Bureau of Land Management and has worked with customers and clients in 49 countries around the world applying cutting-edge math and science in diverse scientific, financial and artistic disciplines. In addition to teaching all ages in numerous schools and conducting teacher training programs, he co-founded a Waldorf-based public school community education program in Montpelier, Vermont.
Ellen A. Ryan

Ellen joins our staff this year as office assistant greeting and supporting students, parents and faculty. Ellen has worked the past 11 years in the Bedford Public Schools as office assistant, special education secretary and most recently as a teaching assistant working with special education kindergarten students. Prior to working in education, Ellen worked as an executive assistant to Marketing VPs in various large corporations. Ellen’s claim to fame is having attended and graduated from The Juilliard School and dancing professionally in Germany with the Opera Ballet.
Evan Tutill

A graduate of the Waldorf School of Massachusetts Bay, Evan attended UMass Amherst where he studied Spanish, plant and soil sciences and microbiology. Evan has worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a microbiologist and as a substitute at the Waldorf High School of Mass Bay.

Betsy’s teaching experiences cover a wide and varied spectrum, including instruction in skiing, Red Cross swimming, public school special needs classes, and work with adolescents. After some time away from teaching pursuing Jewish studies at Brandeis University, completing training in working with dyslexia at MGH, and establishing a private tutoring practice, Betsy joined the high school in 1997. She completed study at Harvard/College Board College Admissions Summer Institute in June, 1999.

Mary Ann has experience as a substitute high school English teacher in public schools. She was Assistant Editor of the quarterly publication of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Mary Ann also has eleven years' experience
as a Waldorf class teacher. She has developed and helped build the high school English curriculum, and has taught at the high school since its inception.

Mara has been involved with non-profit organizations for more than 30 years. She was the Administrative Chair and Community Relations Coordinator at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School from 1991 to 1996. Mara was a founder of DANA, the Development and Administrative Network of AWSNA (Association of Waldorf Schools of North America), in 1993 and served as its Co-Chair through 2010. Mara served on the AWSNA Leadership Council for four years. She was a core faculty member of the Waldorf School Administration and Community Development Program of Sunbridge College and adjunct faculty of the Administrative Course at Rudolf Steiner College from 1996 to 2008
