Opportunities to Study Abroad
 | | WHS junior on exchange in Cali, Columbia Waldorf school |
Because there are more than 800 Waldorf schools worldwide, our students have the opportunity to live far from home while continuing their Waldorf education. We are proud of our distinctive foreign exchange program, and encourage our tenth and eleventh graders to participate. Students live with a host family and study at a Waldorf school in another country for a semester, immersing themselves in a foreign culture and language. Our students have attended schools in Germany, Switzerland, Finland, France, Chile, Argentina, Columbia, and Peru.
"Not many high school students have the opportunity to spend six months abroad in a foreign country. During my junior year, I attended a Waldorf school in Gottingen, Germany. Being in Germany for an extended period of time made me realize how much I love the language. That's when I first started to plan to make German a major focus of study in college."--Waldorf alumnus, currently enrolled in International Studies and Economics program at Connecticut College.
Applications from International Students
Waldorf High School has very limited openings for direct exchange or international students. Before preparing an application, please contact Susan Morris, our enrollment coordinator, to determine if there are any openings for the current academic year or next year: send email to Susan Morris .
We welcome applications from students abroad when exchange partners are available. Currently we have students look ing for an exchange in a Spanish speaking country and in an English speaking country for the Spring of 2010. We do not have any students seeking an exchange in a German speaking country. In recent years, we have had students from Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Israel, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Columbia, Japan and Korea. They enrich our school environment with their different experiences, perspectives and cultures. They enroll as direct exchange students or as international students who are hosted by school families, friends or relatives. (No host families are currently available.) International students who are enrolling for a semester or less, may sometimes receive an individual determination of tuition, as appropriate, and the student pays a stipend for room and board to the host family.
All international students need a visa to study at our school. After successful completion of our admissions process, we will file electronically a visa petition, the I-20, on her/his behalf. A paper copy will be sent to the student who takes the signed document to an appointment with the American consulate. See the Department of State's website, www.travel.state.gov, for general information about studying in the United States and the visa process.
